- **Event Description**: Halloween special FORAGING COURSE (Family-Friendly): Witches, Plants & Protective Magic 1st Nov 2026 ColeortonAbout this EventAs Halloween approaches, Charnwood’s woodlands take on a more mysterious feel — the perfect setting to explore the fascinating links between plants, fungi, folklore, and the stories of witches who once used the natural world to heal, protect… or poison.Our Family-Friendly Halloween Woodland Discovery Session is a relaxed, hands-on experience for adults and children, designed to spark curiosity, imagination, and careful observation while exploring the woodland through a seasonal, story-led lens.This 1.5–2 hour session gives children plenty of time to explore, spot fungi, examine trees and plants, and take part in themed activities along the way. While we’ll look for autumn fungi where conditions allow, the session also focuses on trees and plants historically linked to folklore, traditional medicine, and witchcraft — ensuring there’s always lots to discover, even in drier weather when mushrooms may be less abundant.Which is which (poisonous or edible?) with the wicked witchYour foraging expert guide will be dressed as a woodland witch, bringing stories and folklore to life as you explore. Through age-appropriate storytelling, we’ll discover:How witches and folk healers once used plants for healing, protection, and poisonsThe thin line between medicine and danger in traditional remediesWhy some plants gained spooky reputations and magical associationsHands-on Halloween ActivitiesChildren (and adults!) will take part in fun, creative learning activities throughout the session, including:Making an ancient-style protective amulet using natural materialsWoodland games, challenges, and discovery tasksStorytelling woven throughout the walkThere will be lots of activities, gentle guidance, and tasty food samples, just like our autumn family-friendly fungi events.Food & Foraging SafetyThis is not a foraging-for-eating session.
