Debate: Is Britain Broken?
Britain is often described as “broken” — a claim fuelled by pressures on the NHS, stagnant wages, housing shortages, immigration disputes and a deep erosion of trust in politics. For many, daily experience seems to confirm that the system no longer works as it should. Yet others argue this diagnosis is too bleak: Britain remains a stable democracy with strong institutions, enduring freedoms and the capacity to reform rather than collapse. Is this a country in terminal decline, or one facing difficult but solvable challenges?
