The ShowCase players present The Outsider by Paul Slade Smith, April 10-11 & 17-18 at 7:30 p.m. and April 12 & 19 at 2:00 p.m. at the Colby High School Theatre.
This comedy offers a sharp satire of modern politics through the story of Ned Newly, a mild-mannered former lieutenant governor, who is unexpectedly thrust into the governorship when a scandal forces his boss to resign. The play opens right after Ned delivers what may be the worst speech in political history, leaving his chief of staff, Dave, and his pollster, Paige, scrambling to repair the damage. Paige soon discovers that Ned has quietly been doing the real work of running the state for years, making him ideally suited for leadership, though the public doesn’t see it that way. Alongside them is Louise, a cheerful new temp hired as Ned’s secretary, whose optimism adds energy to the office. Arthur, a top-tier political consultant with irresistible confidence, dazzles everyone with his showmanship. Rachel, a sarcastic TV reporter jaded by years of covering politics, treats Ned’s rise as just another political joke, while her cameraman, A.C., a grounded and observant “everyman,” offers quiet wisdom amid the chaos. Through these colorful characters, the play charts Ned’s reluctant but compelling transformation from political “outsider” to the face of the state.
