- **Event Name**: Persepolis // screening & discussion
- **Event Start and End Date**: Wed, 06 May, 2026 at 06:00 pm
- **Event Description**: Since the killing of Mahsa Amini in 2022 – whose only „sin” was not wearing a hijab, mandated by the Iranian State –, the global public has been perhaps more attentive to the plight of women in particular and citizens in general in the so-called Islamic Republic of Iran. Her death prompted widespread protests in Iran against the theocratic regime, which was brutally suppressed. In 2025-2026 we have seen more demonstrations in the country, of a scope that for a brief moment even made it possible to imagine the popular overthrow of the islamist regime – this uprising was again drowned in blood, with the largest massacres in modern Iranian history. Then, in February – not one year after the Twelve Day War – Israel and the USA have attacked Iran in an act of illegal aggression. Although these actors have at first sworn by precise strikes at military targets, civilian casualties amassed in the first few days, and both civilian and military infrastructure has been bombed. The peoples of Iran have not only the regime to fear, but also these foreign actors with their own agenda – one which, as Donald Trump has kindly reminded everyone, can well include the complete obliteration of Iran.

These are some impressions about Iran, but there is so much that we do not know about the peoples of this vast country. We organize this event in the hopes that we may come closer to some kind of understanding of Iranian society. We will screen the animated film „Persepolis”, which will be followed by discussion. In order to ground the discussion in a closer knowledge of Iran, we have invited Iranian-born philosopher Siyaveș Azeri, now living in Cluj-Napoca/Kolozsvár, who we’ve asked to give us a short account of how he sees the unfolding situation, and who can answer our questions and contribute to the discussion.

This event will be held in English.
