Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.Across the nation, communities pause to remember Dr. King—not only for his words, but for his unwavering commitment to justice, service, and the creation of the Beloved Community. She is the daughter of the late Ernest and Mary McKnight. Melissa is married to Wardell Rouse. They have two daughters, Jada and Kennedy. Melissa is a graduate of York Comprehensive High School and later graduated from Clemson University with a degree in accounting. She obtained her CPA license and has spent the past 19 years working for an international nonprofit organization.Melissa is a community activist, an accountant, writer, and God-centered national speaker. During the 2020 election, Melissa started a grassroot voter registration drive in western York County, named it “Let's Get It.” She and a group of 60 volunteers registered more than 260 voters.Melissa currently serves with the Western York County Branch of the NAACP as the 1st Vice President and formerly served as an executive member of the York County Democrat Party. She is a member of the Rock HillAlumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. She was a 2022 Jim Clyburn Fellow and served as former SC Senator Mike Fanning’s campaign manager. Losing the election by 28 votes, Melissa uses this as a lifelong lesson to all constituents that every vote counts.Melissa leans on little-known African American heroes to encourage the audience to learn their history, become politically active, and believe in the power within.One of her favorite scriptures is Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
