- **Event Name**: Giant Volcanic Eruptions in the Lake Superior Region with Tom Fitz
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 11 Apr, 2026 at 10:30 am (-05:00)
- **Event Description**: The bedrock in the Lake Superior Region retains a record of one of the largest volcanic episodes in Earth's history. A billion years ago, a chain of volcanoes erupted enormous lava flows that flooded the land, repaved the surface of the Earth, exploded catastrophic eruptions of ash, and nearly split the North American continent in half. The record of that dramatic continental rifting episode is now beautifully exposed along the shores of Lake Superior. This slide show presentation will illustrate these remarkable rocks and explain why the Lake Superior Region contains one of the largest volcanic provinces on Earth.

Dr. Tom Fitz has been studying the geology of the Lake Superior Region for decades and enjoys sharing the fascinating stories of the region’s past. Tom holds BS, MS, and PhD degrees in geology, with expertise in earth materials, earth history, and the relationship between people and their planet. Tom taught geoscience at Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, for twenty-five years and is now an Academic Advisor and Adjunct Professor of Earth and Environmental Science at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
