Lyz Jaakola is a Fond du Lac tribal member, Cloquet City Councilor, faculty and board member at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College, and co-owner of Miigwitches Brew Coffee. An educator and community leader, she has taught American Indian Studies throughout the region for more than two decades and helped produce the Emmy Award-winning documentary series Ojibwe Waasa Inaabidaa: We Look in All Directions. She regularly shares her knowledge of Anishinaabe culture and history through teaching and public presentations.

Democracy 101 is a monthly series exploring how local government works—and how you can make an impact. Each interactive, one-hour session breaks down key topics in a clear, accessible way. Whether you’re new to civic engagement or already involved, you’ll come away with fresh insight and practical tools.
