New River Ranch harkens back to the original style of mountain music, evoking early Stanley Brothers' vibes and the greatest hits from the early 1920’s and beyond.  You are sure to go away tapping your feet and feeling proud to be from the Appalachian Mountains after experiencing New River Ranch's dance music, murder ballads and storytelling.
 
New River Ranch's members are accomplished musicians from Southwest Virginia and Western North Carolina with a wide variety of experience playing music all over the world. Fiddler and vocalist Trevor McKenzie is a professional music archivist, author, and the Director of Appalachian Studies Center at Appalachian State University.  McKenzie has played internationally, taking the rich music and its history along with him. On banjo, Corbin Hayslett is a master of both old time and early bluegrass style picking.  Educated in our backyard at UVA Wise, he has a passion for the music that is clear the minute his banjo strings come to life.  Hayslett has played internationally, as well as at the Grand Ole Opry. Upright bass player Jesse Morris comes from a family of musicians also dedicated to the preservation of the original sounds of traditional mountain music. Jesse’s hard driving bass playing has been heard on many stages across the world and U.S. folk festivals, as well as frequently at the Carter Family Fold. On guitar, recording artist Jesse Smathers won the Virginia Folk Music Association guitar championship, as well as first place bluegrass band competition at the Old Fiddlers Convention in Galax. Smathers is a teacher of mandolin and guitar, and tours professionally with the Lonesome River Band.
