Slavic Village Better Block
How do you envision the neighborhood's streets improving?
We invite you to come discuss how we can bring temporary enhancements to Slavic Village's streets and public spaces. As we partner with an organization called Better Blocks, we hope to show the potential for permanent projects in the future that reflects the needs of the community.
This project is being coordinated in conjunction with Rooms To Let CLE 2018, which will take place on Fleet Ave, Forman Ave, and E 67th Street.
What is Better Blocks?
The project was developed to show the city how the block could be revived to improve area safety, health, and economics if ordinances that restricted small business and multi-modal infrastructure were removed. Since that time, Better Block projects have been developed throughout the world with many of the temporary infrastructure improvements and businesses made permanent.
How do we make a Better Block?
Many projects incorporate WikiBlock which is an open-source toolkit of designs for benches, chairs, planters, stages, bus stops, beer garden fences, and kiosks that can be downloaded for free and taken to a makerspace where a CNC router (a computer-aided machine) can cut them out of a sheet of plywood. Most products can then be assembled without glue or nails, and used instantly to make a block better.
Bring a neighbor and grab your thinking caps! Food and drinks will be provided.
