- **Event Description**: Lecture on healing racial trauma in youth of color via socialization, emerging tech and clinical practice with Dr. Riana Anderson.About this EventJoin us for this year’s Kessler Freedheim Lecture featuring Dr. Riana Elyse Anderson, PhD, LCP, Associate Professor, Columbia University, School of Social Work. Anderson is a licensed clinical psychologist and CEO + Founder of RACE Space Inc. and Associate Professor at Columbia University’s School of Social Work. Her scholarship focuses on applied coping strategies to reduce race-related stress in Black families and improve psychological outcomes for Black youth.Racial discrimination continues to shape the mental, behavioral and physical health of youth of color. In response, many families engage in racial socialization, or intentional communication about racialized experiences, to help youth cope with and heal from discrimination. While racial socialization strategies align with many therapeutic practices, a gap remains between how families address race-related stress and how clinicians and providers support youth in clinical settings. In this lecture, Dr. Anderson will explore theories, practices and burgeoning technological interventions important in the healing processes of racial trauma. She will discuss practical strategies for strengthening racial socialization processes and consider how advancing technologies, particularly in light of what is known about the proportion of time youth spend on mobile devices, can be leveraged responsibly to benefit youth of color.Dr. Anderson will be joined by community respondent Habeebah Rasheed Grimes, Founder/Principal Consultant, of Habeebah Rasheed Grimes, LLCThis event will be moderated by Jennifer King, Associate Professor and Co-Director, Center on Trauma and Adversity, Case Western Reserve University, Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Science.RSVP to attend here.
