Mr. Simon's Lake Erie Fishing Camp
The Lake Erie Fishing Camp is a unique, 1-day, boat-based camp on Lake Erie. Each Camper will experience local fishing on Lake Erie aboard a PRIVATE (public not allowed) Fishing Charter Head Boat. Our experienced crew will teach Campers the fundamentals of fishing or give new pointers to those already familiar with the sport. Each trip will be limited to 22 Campers to create a more personal fishing experience for each child. Each trip will be led by Mr. Simon- a 23 year veteran Science Teacher currently teaching in the Berea City School District.
Who is Fishing Camp for?The Lake Erie Fishing Camp is for boys AND girls aged 9-16 years old (some exceptions may be made). Parents are certainly allowed to join their child for a fun-filled experience at Fishing Camp, but you must also purchase a full priced ticket. NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY-JUST AN INTEREST IN THE OUTDOORS AND FISHING!!
How much does it cost…and what is included? The cost per child per trip is $99. This includes:
-6-hour Lake Erie fishing charter
-PRIVATE (public not allowed) Fishing Charter Head Boat-Rods-Reels-Tackle-Bait-Drinks-Snacks-Lunch-Fishing Instruction-Custom “Lake Erie Fishing Camp” T-shirtEvery Camper is also entered into a raffle at the end of the day!
How long is Fishing Camp?Fishing Camp is from 8:00am-3:00pm. The boat departs promptly at 8:00am. PLEASE ARRIVE AT LEAST 15 MINUTES prior to departure for check in, especially because the tickets are non-refundable. Our trips generally leave right on time!!! The boat will arrive back at the dock at 2:00pm. The Kids Raffle and a brief fish cleaning demonstration will be from 2:00-3:00pm. The Fishing Camp will end at 3:00pm.
How is Fishing Camp run? A typical day has us fishing for Lake Erie yellow perch. It is very common for Campers to catch other species such as walleye, smallmouth bass, sheep head, catfish, etc. The fishing is generally really good, good, or fair. Even on the “fair” days, we find plenty of ways to have fun. Campers will have the CHOICE of keeping their “catch.” We ideally finish each day with a little biology lesson (A.K.A. Blood ‘N Guts) at the dock. We fillet a fish or two, see what it ate, investigate its internal anatomy, etc. For some kids, this is the best part of the day. To be sure, this is a “Fishing” Camp…not a “Fish Market” Camp!
What happens if it rains? We still go out. All of our boats have a full hard top and side curtain protection from weather. The rain is of no consequence; we are concerned with wind and sea conditions and they are not necessarily bad during the rain. In fact, some of our best conditions can be on a rainy day, so dress appropriately. In the case of severe weather, we may cancel the activity up to an hour before the start time in which case you will be allowed to reschedule tickets (subject to availability) or receive credit for a future event.
How experienced do I have to be?You don't! We encourage everyone, from novices to experts, to come and join us! We have a very knowledgeable, family oriented captain and crew on every trip to assist anglers of all skill levels.
I don't want to fish, can I still go on the trip?People who do not want to fish are welcome to attend the trip, but you must also purchase a full priced ticket. If you are not planning to fish, you will not need a licenseHowever, if you plan to help your child fish, or hold a rod and reel at any time, the Fish and Game Department defines you as a fisherman and requires you to have a license (if age 16+).
How early should I arrive to check in before the trip? Please arrive 15 minutes prior to departure for check in, especially because the tickets are non-refundable. Our trips generally leave right on time!!!
Are parents allowed on the boat?Parents are certainly allowed to join their child for a fun-filled experience at Fishing Camp, however, a full priced ticket must be purchased.
Is the trip suitable for pregnant women? While we don't put a limitation on who may or may not attend, pregnant women should always consult with their doctors before participating in any active activities.
ABOUT FISHING LIMITS AND TRIP SPECIFICS
Do you guarantee that fish will be caught?
We can guarantee fishing but not catching. Our crew will do everything in its power to put you where the fish are. We cannot control what does or does not bite the hook.
Do we need to keep the fish we catch? While you are welcome to keep any legal sized fish, we promote catch and release and responsible conservation of our natural resources. You may also give your legal sized fish to another angler if you so choose.
How many fish can I keep? The captain and crew are up to date with the most recent Ohio Department of Fish and Game size and possession limits, and will inform you of these at the start of the trip.
What's the limit for a child under 16 with no fishing license?Even though children UNDER 16 years of age are allowed to fish on our trips without a license, they are allowed the same legal limit as an adult fisherman.
What do I do with the fish I decide to keep?We will assist you with placing your fish in your sack. After the trip, fish cleaning is available for a fee.
Can I sell the fish I catch?NO! It is illegal to sell fish that are caught by way of "Recreational Sport Fishing." If you are caught violating this law, you will be ordered to appear in court, fined, and items can be confiscated.
What happens when everyone catches their limits? If everyone catches limits of the fish we're targeting for the day, we will simply follow a catch and release policy and keep fishing. In any event, we do not simply end the trip early.
How far does the boat go out?Between 1 and 3 miles from the harbor.
