Food is a foundation for humanity; yet, 19% of Cuyahoga County residents—over 240,000 people—are food insecure. Focusing on Freedom from Want, this For Freedoms Town Hall this examines the structures that regulate and impose upon access to food in America. We will look together at how food insecurity and food deserts are created, and what the effects are on nutrition, health, and well-being.

The Museum opens early this day to host Hashtag Lunchbag Cleveland, an organization that makes and distributes lunches to people who are homeless in Cleveland. Volunteer your time before the Town Hall to help assemble and, as space allows, distribute lunches to the urban homeless community.

At 1PM, a panel of artists and leaders working in food production, distribution, and access will convene to discuss with the audience the factors, outcomes, and possible solutions to hunger and food insecurity in our country.

Moderated by For Freedoms founder and artist Eric Gottesman, the panel includes Ginger Brooks Takahashi, Marc White, Mary LaVigne-Butler, and Ben Hall. Each participant will receive a print designed by General Sisters for the event. Come break bread with your neighbors and discuss creative ways to provide nutritious food for all.

ABOUT FOR FREEDOMS TOWN HALL
MOCA Cleveland is partnering with For Freedoms, an artist-run initiative founded by artists Hank Willis Thomas and Eric Gottesman, in a two-year residency focused on a series of free, quarterly Town Hall discussions. Co-produced with The City Club of Cleveland, the nation’s oldest continuous forum for free speech, these programs provide safe platforms for topical conversations that seek to encourage a more active, collaborative, inclusive, and empathic community.
