Food is a foundation for humanity; yet, 19% of Cuyahoga County residents—over 240,000 people—are food insecure. Focusing on Freedom from Want, this program examines the structures that regulate and impose upon the supply and history of access to food in America. We will look together at how food insecurity and food deserts are created, and what the effects are on nutrition, health, and well-being.

The Museum opens early this day to host Hashtag Lunchbag Cleveland, an organization that makes and distributes lunches to people who are homeless in Cleveland. Volunteer your time to help assemble and, as space allows, distribute lunches to the urban homeless community.

At 1PM, a panel of local, regional, and national leaders working in food production, distribution, access, and policy will convene to discuss with the audience the factors, outcomes, and possible solutions to food insecurity and inequity in our country. Moderated by For Freedoms founder and artist Eric Gottesman, the panel includes Ginger Brooks Takahashi, co-founder of the Braddock, PA artist collective General Sisters, and representatives from the Greater Cleveland FoodBank, Rid-All Green Partnership, and other local and national organizations.

ABOUT THE FOR FREEDOMS TOWN HALL PROJECT

MOCA Cleveland is partnering with For Freedoms, an artist-run initiative founded by artists Hank Willis Thomas and Eric Gottesman, in a two-year residency focused on a series of free, quarterly Town Hall discussions. Co-produced with The City Club of Cleveland, these programs provide safe platforms for topical conversations that seek to encourage a more active, collaborative, inclusive, and empathic community.
