It has been transformed into a beautiful and accessible recreational trail, offering a glimpse into Singapore's natural heritage.The Rail Corridor serves as a haven for diverse flora and fauna species, and provides a crucial migration pathway for wildlife, allowing them to move freely between different green spaces. This connectivity is essential for genetic diversity and the long-term survival of species. Efforts are underway to restore and enhance the natural habitats within the Rail Corridor by reintroducing native plant species and creating suitable environments for wildlife.As part of NParks' effort to enhance the habitat along the Rail Corridor South, volunteers with NUS Toddycats are planting a diversity of native saplings. We also have to check to push back competing vegetation which can overwhlem the newly-planted saplings. This effort (SPA) enhances sapling survability, and continues until saplings are talla nd strong enough to form a canopy, and resist such threats.Some areas require more help than others due to the variable nature of the habitat and pressure of competing plants. So extend the invitation according to need. We invite you to join us on this meaningful journey and enjoy a morning of fellowship with nature!Sapling Protection Action (SPA) include the following:Flattening and removing fast-growing competing invasive species away from the stem base of planted saplingsHand-weeding persistent grass sprouts at the base of recently-planted tree saplingsCutting off and clearing any creepers on recently-planted tree saplingsTopping up leaf litter and/or approved soil mixture (ASM) around the base of recently-planted tree saplingsHelping to stake recently-planted saplings to give them temporary support whilst they strengthen their trunks (where necessary)Replace old, broken or lost tree identification tags (where necessary)Please take noteEach participant must be registered to participate for safety, indemnity and PDPA.Participants MUST wear COVERED SHOES – without this, participation is not possible.For this SPA, you must wear long pants and long sleeves or arm sleeves to protect against scratches and plant sap from the vegetation – otherwise some may experience allergic reactiopnsYou may want to use a face covering (scarf or mask) when tackling dense stands of vegetation to avoid inhaling plant dust.We also strongly recommend that you apply sunblock, and wear a hat/cap to help shelter yourself from the sun.Bring two litres of drinking water - you will need it as it is more hot and humid than usual these days!Have a hearty meal before the session and bring some snacks to munch on to prevent exhaustionBring your own gloves, if you have a pair (we will supply otherwise)Bring a change of clothes in case you get drenched or dirty after the physical activityFurther details will be emailed to registered participants at least 2 days before the session.Where do we meet?We meet at the Rail Corridor itself, at the bottom of the Holland Road access staircase, behind Caltex/Jelita Mall (map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/1wstJf5iZ8aiHXSZA).
