Clementi HDB Heartland (& The Outskirts) Walking Tour

Uncle Chris served his National Service from January 1973 to January 1975. I was based at the then 2nd Battalion of the Singapore Infantry Regiment at Holland Road. Those were the early days of National Service. The focus was on fitness, strength, stamina among others.

One of the favorite training grounds was at Colombo Hill – where Clementi MRT station is now. We didn’t know why it was called Colombo Hill. Nobody told us Colombo Camp was once there. The road leading to Colombo Hill was nothing more than a clayey track where the 3 Tonners would drop all the trainees for their stints. Clementi Road itself was nothing more than a 2-way colonial road.

No one, at that time, would have guessed that, that barren country side would one day morphed into what it is today. Further just across the road, was the Ulu Pandan Cemetery – which was later cleared to become one of Singapore’s first condominium projects. Yes, Bishan isn’t the only HDB Heartland raised from a former cemetery. The condominiums at Ulu Pandan were some years ahead.

Meanwhile, the camp at the 2nd Battalion of the Singapore Infantry Regiment was developed into some expensive high end landed real estates. Though hearsay has it that the military camp was “extremely” haunted, no one has yet to come forth with any supernatural gossip of such kind.

Meet me, 9am at Clementi MRT, on the 16th Nov 2025 where I will introduce you to Mr. Cecil Clementi Smith and Dr Albert Winsemus – who were really instrumental in making Singapore what we are today. This tour will take us to the far outskirts of Clementi. Please come in good comfortable walking shoes. We start at 9am, and hope to be done by 12pm, maybe 12.30pm.
