- **Event Description**: Ancient people knew that summer and winter solstices happened every year, but they could not have understood why. Humans over the millennia have gained knowledge of our solar system by experiment, diligence, curosity, and reason to understand the causes of phenomena that we observe. We will explore the development of this understanding as we observe the longest daylight of the year.

David Brown and his wife Chery Green have been members of the Ethical Society of St. Louis since 2003. Both have served on the Board of Trustees and other functions of the Society. After David received his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Nebraska in 1971, he taught at Stephens College in Columbia MO and at Rockford College in Rockford IL before deciding to switch to software development for several St. Louis companies, ultimately retiring from Boeing. These days David is active with the Washington University Osher Lifelong Learning Institute as both a student and a teacher. Twenty years ago, during a celebration of the summer solstice on the back parking lot, David demonstrated the annual path we observe of the sun.

This Platform will feature music from The Ethical Band, the house band at the Ethical Society of St. Louis. It is composed of and led by members who are musicians of all kinds, ages, and skill levels. Whether you are a trained player, beginner, or just want to shake a tambourine, The Ethical Band is a great way to both dip your toes into performing and become more involved in our Humanist community.
