In our ongoing Practice of Citizenship series, Eric Liu shares that real democracy depends on active, informed, and skilled participation. Citizenship isn’t about legal paperwork or documentation status, it’s about a simple formula: Power + Character = Citizenship. It requires understanding how to make change happen while building the daily habits of a community-focused contributor. Individual civic actions might seem minor, but our collective, repeated efforts are exactly what build long-term resilience against national and global crises.Event Schedule, October 7, 2026:7:00 pm – 8:30 pm: Civic Café book discussion with Eric Liu, Hillman Clark-Fox Forum at Washington University in St. Louis8:30 pm – 9:30 pm: Reception for all audience members in Hillman Clark-Fox ForumDoors will open at 6:00 pm, and we encourage you to arrive early to allow time for walk from parking and ticket checks at the door.Ticketing: Although this is a free event open to all, seats are limited and tickets will be required to attend the program and the reception immediately following. Hillman Clark-Fox Forum accommodates general admission seating; your ticket does not designate a specific seat. Each attendee will need their own ticket in their name. He is the author of numerous acclaimed books, including most recently : Civic Sermons on Love, Responsibility, and Democracy — a New York Times New & Notable Book — and Live Like a Citizen: 8 Ways to Change Your Mindset and Our Country, to be published in October 2026. Liu served as a White House speechwriter for President Bill Clinton and as the President’s deputy domestic policy adviser. He was later appointed by President Barack Obama to the board of the Corporation for National and Community Service. A graduate of Yale College and Harvard Law School, Liu was elected in 2020 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and co-chairs its Our Common Purpose commission.
