Barry Payne returns to the Martello Lounge (or as it was in the 70’s, the 101 Disco) with The Long Shadows.
He was a founder member of the proto-punk band, ‘The Johnny 7 Combo’ who emerged out of Clacton-on-sea, in the spring of 1977. By the end of that year he became a full time member of Wreckless Eric’s band (playing bass on Eric’s seminal first LP for Stiff Records), then San Francisco’s Pearl Harbour (& the Explosions) working and touring extensively with groups such as The Clash, The Talking Heads and The B52’s. Over subsequent years he has worked and toured with a diverse collection of artists ranging from Madness, Eurythmics and Steve Marriott to Chris Jagger and The Alabama 3.
Barry Payne & the Long Shadows draw influence from a heady mix of proto-punk powerpop, classic americana and gypsy folk all shaken up with a dash of glam rock.
With a band that includes: Nick Simms (Cornershop, Natasha Atlas) on drums, Pat McCarthy (Katrina Leskanich band) on bass, Chris Burrows (The Godfathers, The Servant) on guitar and Toby Baker (Shunk Anansie, Eric Clapton) on keys, they really are too good to miss!
Also playing will be Bob Collum, bringing with him the music of his native Tulsa, Oklahoma. With two Stateside albums already under his belt, through extensive gigging, he’s built a following both around and outside the UK.
Songs of love and loss jostle with murder ballads. Slices of Western swing share floor space with Holly-esque rockabilly. Memories of growing up in the America he left behind keep company with wry glimpses of the Essex he's made his home.
