Step away from screens and spend a calm, satisfying few hours learning the timeless craft of ropework.
In this half-day workshop, ropeworker and basket maker Laurence Knoop will guide you through traditional decorative knotting techniques using natural flax rope. Working with one continuous length of rope, you’ll learn how to create a beautiful flat knot pattern, slowly forming your own hand-knotted rope trivet.
This is a wonderfully tactile, mindful process; all about rhythm, repetition and working with your hands. Along the way, Laurence will introduce you to essential ropework skills and tools, including basic knotting techniques and how to use a fid to create a splice. These are skills you can carry forward into other creative projects at home.
You’ll also hear a little about the history and current use of flax fibre in the UK, connecting your making to a long tradition of practical, handmade craft.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with:
✔️ A hand-knotted rope trivet (approx. 24cm across)
✔️ A set of foundational ropework skills
✔️ A deeper appreciation of this heritage craft and the pleasure of making something slowly and well
No previous experience needed. All materials are provided.
Perfect for anyone who enjoys hands-on making, heritage crafts, or trying something completely new.
