Tuesday Preschool Story Hour Program (10:00 - 11:00 AM, Tuesdays, Winter 2019)
This ticket is for all 7 Tuesday classes of Preschool Story Hour. Class dates are January 15, 22, 29; February 5, 12, 19 & 26.
Come have fun on the farm and in the garden with your preschooler while practicing early reading skills! Gorman Heritage Farm's Preschool Story Hours offer fun and engaging farm experiences paired with the best in children's literature.
This class is designed for emergent readers ages 2 - 5 years and builds connections between the five senses, caring for farm animals, planting and growing food, farm machines, and music with early literacy components (reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and visualization).
This is a fun, age-appropriate class series with lots of hands-on activities for a child/caregiver team. Each class begins with a song/story/activity component indoors and continues with a trip outside to the gardens or farmyard.
Returning Story Hour families will appreciate new books and activities mixed with some past favorites.
Each child must be supervised by a parent or caregiver. One caregiver may accompany two siblings or friends.
Program cost includes all-day admission to Gorman Heritage Farm on each day of the class. Stay and play at the Farm!
Programming lasts one full hour, so plan to arrive early to be settled. The class may finish at 11am away from our classroom, so allow time to walk back to parking lot.
Program Descriptions by week:
January 15 - Furry Farm Friends - Our series begins with an introduction to all our farm animals, with a focus on our animals with fur! We will read and sing together before heading out to our farmyard to pet and and even feed some of our furry farm friends. (Farmyard hike)
January 22 - Feathery Farm Friends - Our series continues with learning about our feathered farm animals. After an interactive story time, children will practice grinding corn as a food for chickens, before visiting with and petting feathered chickens and ducks. Children get to feed their corn to chickens, while noticing the different colors of chickens and eggs we have on our farm. (Farmyard hike)
January 29 - No feathers, no fur, no problem! - Many of our farm friends have neither fur nor feathers, but they get along just fine! Children will get to experience how invertebrates do real work on the farm. Don’t be afraid to get dirty or sticky as we learn about our farm’s smallest farm animals: worms and honey bees! (Garden hike)
February 5 - Five Farm Senses - This time our story hour begins with a puppet show about using our five farm senses. We will wake up our senses by practicing our five senses indoors, before exploring our gardens with our senses, even getting to use our sense of taste on our hoop house vegetables. (Garden hike)
February 12 - Horsing Around - Preschoolers will learn a new word: equine! We will introduce the different animals within the horse family, and of course pretend to be a horse, before we head up to the farmyard to meet and greet with our equine residents. (Farmyard hike)
February 19 - Seeds! - Children will explore the different shapes, textures, and sounds of various seeds. Children will get to create their own seed chart, learn what seeds need to grow, and also plant season-appropriate vegetable seeds in our garden beds. (Garden hike)
February 26 - Tractor Day - Little ones will learn about the different jobs tractors do on the farm through play and song. The class will enjoy the farm on a tractor ride, while singing hayride songs, before having the opportunity to get their picture taken on a tractor. Little hands will stay warm holding a cup of warm cider to enjoy on our last day of class. (Tractor ride to the farmyard, walk back to parking lot)
