Open Ice Dye Lab (2-day Workshop)
This is a single workshop, taking place over 2 days. The ticket price covers both sessions.
Part 1: Saturday, March 2 from 1:30 - 4:30 pm
Part 2: Sunday, March 3 from 1:30 - 4:30 pm
If you've done some ice dyeing before and have been antsy to try out the ideas that have been percolating in your noggin ever since - this session is for you. Come take your ice dyeing to the next level, by continuing the experimentation process and exploring your own folds and color combinations.
BYO fabric or home goods (such as dinner napkins, pillowcases or dishtowels) for dyeing. (There's only so much fabric that will fit in the pans, so keep projects on the small-ish side. When in doubt, bring it just in case, and we'll talk it out.) Items must be 100% natural plant fibers (e.g. cotton, bamboo, flax, rayon, hemp, linen). Wash and dry the fabric first, using no fabric softener in either the washing or the drying process. (That part is important. The fabric must be free from chemical residue.)
Ready-to-dye fabric, scarves and socks will be available in my studio for purchase at cost, if you prefer that option.
The supply fee includes everything you'll need to dye a few pans of projects: mordant (soda ash), dust masks, rubber gloves, ice, fiber reactive dye, textile detergent, color fixative, trays, pans and water.
This is a 2-session workshop. On Saturday, we will prepare our fabric and leave it overnight for the ice to melt and the colors to set. On Sunday, we’ll return to the classroom for the rinse and reveal. (You’ll sign up for a time slot between 1:30 - 4:30 pm that day, to help stagger usage of the sink.)
Please wear old clothes. Smocks are available for added protection.
This workshop involves standing, bending, and repetitive hand work (squeezing and wringing during the rinsing phase). Class is intended for Teens & Adults with some ice dyeing experience.
My studio is located in the Lindner Annex at the corner of Montgomery Road and Kennedy Avenue in the Kennedy Heights neighborhood of Cincinnati Ohio USA. Come to the side of the building with the colorful lemon head mural (facing Kennedy Avenue). The studio entrance is behind the tree next to the Ohio Valley Woodturners Guild loading dock.
