The work tells the story of the Russian Revolution of 1905, starting with the events of the famous Bloody Sunday. The opening movement, The Palace Square, utilizes Russian folk music to depict the calm before the storm. The 9th of January is the violence of Bloody Sunday and features several momentous arrival points to represent the Imperial Guard firing upon the crowd of protestors outside the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. The third movement, In Memoriam, is a lament based upon a popular Russian revolution funeral march. Shostakovich leaves the audience a warning of future events with Tocsin, a traditional warning bell that was also the name of several revolutionary magazines at the time.
