Nearly 3,000 innocent men, women, and children lost their lives as terrorists carried out coordinated attacks against the United States. Among those who made the ultimate sacrifice were 343 firefighters, 37 Port Authority Police officers, 23 New York City Police officers, paramedics, military personnel, and countless civilians who demonstrated extraordinary courage in the face of unimaginable tragedy. On that clear Tuesday morning, American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 8:46 AM, followed just 17 minutes later by United Airlines Flight 175, which crashed into the South Tower. As millions watched in disbelief, America realized it was under attack. At 9:37 AM, American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon, claiming the lives of military personnel and civilians serving our nation. Then, through remarkable courage and selflessness, the passengers and crew aboard United Airlines Flight 93 fought back against the hijackers, preventing an even greater tragedy before the aircraft crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Their bravery remains one of the defining moments of heroism in American history. Within hours, both towers of the World Trade Center collapsed, forever changing the New York City skyline and leaving an enduring impact on our nation and the fire service. The attacks claimed the lives of 2,977 innocent victims, while countless others have since succumbed to illnesses related to their rescue and recovery efforts. September 11 serves as a powerful reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and resilience demonstrated by first responders and ordinary citizens who answered the call without hesitation. It is also a day to remember the families whose lives were forever changed and to ensure that future generations never forget the events of that day.
