# Event Details - **Event Name**: It’s Alive! - Creating Movement in Small Sculpture Using Simple Mechanisms - **Event Start and End Date**: Sun, 23 Aug, 2026 at 10:00 am – Sun, 23 Aug, 2026 at 04:00 pm - **Event Description**: In this fun workshop you’ll bring life to your own whimsical creations by making them move using simple hand cranked mechanisms.About this EventThis workshop will give an overview of simple automata mechanics, then you will be guided in making your own fun automaton to take home.Annie has always enjoyed the whimsical nature of automata and has taught herself how to make her own from books and experimentation. She’ll show you examples from her own collection as well as some of her own creations. She'll discuss elements of the creative process before presenting 2 hands on sections to the workshop :-Part 1 - making a pecking or flying bird using a humble clothes peg. This helps in understanding how the movement of the peg can be translated into varoius scenarios. Part 2 - deciding on the subject of your own automaton and how it will use movement to tell a story. Using a selection of craft materials you’ll make your sculpture to bring alive with your own hand cranked machine. Examples might be a flying or pecking bird, a running or dancing person or a jumping kangaroo. Then you'll be making a mechanism to bring your creation to life. Learn how one movement can be used in various ways in creating a scenario. You’ll be guided in exploring the use of everyday materials such as cardboard, wire, chopsticks, and tin cans to make simple mechanisms that move in various ways.
