🚗 Drive Time: Approximately 1 hour 45 minutes from Virginia Beach.

Important: Please use “Teta Kain Nature Preserve” in your GPS rather than just the address. The preserve entrance is just before the Dragon Run bridge on Farley Park Road and can be easy to miss. Please arrive 15–20 minutes early so we can begin the hike on time.

Join East Coast Hikers as we explore one of Virginia’s most pristine and mysterious natural areas! We’ll begin at Teta Kain Nature Preserve before venturing into Dragon Run State Forest for a 6–8 mile adventure through one of the largest remaining blackwater swamp ecosystems in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. We’ll hike along peaceful gated forest roads beneath towering hardwoods and pines, cross a scenic boardwalk, and enjoy the quiet beauty of tea-colored waters, wetlands, and abundant wildlife. Keep an eye out for birds, turtles, deer, and other native wildlife as we experience this hidden gem together.

🥾 Distance: 6–8 miles
💪 Difficulty: Easy
🌲 Terrain: Mostly flat gravel and dirt forest roads with a short boardwalk and nature trail at the start.
⏱️ Pace: Moderate, social pace with regrouping as needed. No one will be left behind.

What to Bring:

* Plenty of water (at least 2 liters recommended)
* Snacks or a light lunch
* Comfortable hiking shoes or trail shoes
* Bug spray (recommended)
* Trekking poles (optional)
* Camera or binoculars if you enjoy photography and birdwatching

Please Note:

* 🚻 Please use the restroom before you arrive. There are no restrooms anywhere at the trailhead or along the route.
* 💧 There is no drinking water available, so bring plenty of water.
* 🗑️ There are no trash cans. Please pack out everything you bring.
* 🐕 Dogs are welcome but must remain on a leash.
* 📵 Cell service may be limited in some areas.
* 🚫 The route follows gated forest roads and is not stroller accessible.
* 🌦️ The hike will proceed rain or shine unless severe weather creates unsafe conditions.
