- **Event Description**: On Tuesday, April 15th, the Gruening and Mirror Lake Middle School Advanced Bands will combine to perform a concert, which will feature a brand-new composition for band, “Qalupalik”, by Brian Balmages.  Gruening and Mirror Lake combined to commission this new composition, and I am sure it will become a popular new piece in the concert band world.  Mr. Balmages will be in Alaska to rehearse the students and conduct the performance, which will take place at 6:30pm in the  Chugiak HS auditorium.  

“Qalupalik” is based on an Inuit legend about an Arctic monster who lures children close to the edge of the sea ice in an attempt to drag them down into the icy depths.  It is a VERY cool piece, and the kids are having a blast rehearsing it!

The concert will also feature three other well-known Balmages pieces, “Kyiv, 2022” (written in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine), “Rippling Watercolors” and “Blue Ridge Reel”.  

The concert will combine about 100 musicians from two of Anchorage’s outstanding middle school band programs on stage, and is sure to be a performance you won’t want to miss!
