Starting with some simple facts and figures, we'll discuss the state of mental health in the UK, focusing on engineering and in particular the construction sector. We'll talk about a range of topics around mental health, including some difficult and sensitive topics, to understand some of the causes and symptoms better. As engineers, we love a good systems approach to problem solving so we'll then talk about different ways to improve on mental health in the workplace, with colleagues and with friends. Engineering and construction remain male-dominated cultures although the balance is gradually improving thanks to the efforts of many. Greater improvements will come from addressing the men in the room, facilitating difficult conversations around masculinity and male mental health, suicide and creating more inclusive cultures. As an experienced and award-winning C-Suite Director with a career in operations and engineering, Jamie has a wealth of leadership, coaching, cultural change and team development expertise. This has included being a Director at the RNLI, Chessington World of Adventures, and the Royal Navy. Building on skills developed across multiple sectors including Defence, Aviation, Maritime, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Construction, Jamie is able to hold authentic and relatable peer-to-peer conversations across the industry. Jamie is the Director at iunctura, a consultancy dedicated to leading company cultural change and tackling mental health. He is also the co-chair of the Men’s Network with EqualEngineers.
