- **Event Description**: One of the most precious items in Hampshire Cultural Trust’s collection is a beautiful brown silk Pelisse, once belonging to Jane Austen. We are proud to have in our care sewing items which belonged to Jane, as well as the most important, surviving item of clothing she wore, her silk pelisse. The estimated date of the production of the pelisse is around 1812-14, which coincides with the publication of Pride and Prejudice, which was and remains Jane Austen’s most successful novel.  She would almost certainly have worn it on special occasions in the last few years of her life, which saw the completion of her last three novels, including Emma. Jane spent most of her life in the county of Hampshire and many collection items, including dresses, shoes and other accessories, are Hampshire pieces dating to Jane Austen’s lifetime.
 
The team at Hampshire Wardrobe have been hard at work creating a replica of the pelisse, doing as much as possible by hand, and discovering the good, the bad, and the ugly of Regency outerwear. 
 
Join Dr Alex Walker as she introduces you to the replica, explains exactly what a pelisse is, and tells the story of how Jane’s came to be in the care of HCT. Alex will be available for a Q&A following her presentation.
 
The event will take place in our Main Gallery. A complimentary glass of wine or hot drink is included in the ticket price.
