This time we’re on the Brooklands Mouth section of the Trail, walking from Kainga Park to Spencer Park.
Beginning in the small village of Kainga, we’ll walk east along and below the Waimakariri stopbank, past the neighbouring village of Stewarts Gully and on to the lower reaches of the Pūharakekenui/Styx River. From the river mouth at Brooklands we turn south, through parts of the Brooklands red-zone and then the Brooklands Lagoon track through to Spencer Park. We see quietly wooded floodplains, salt marshes, rivers, lagoons and dunes, across to the mouth of the mighty Waimakariri, all inhabited by waders, waterfowl, cows, alpacas – and kotare 😊.
The walk is FREE and, as in the past, members are welcome to bring a friend or two.
Non-members are welcome to join us on this walk – where they will be gently encouraged to join our increasingly vibrant 360 Trail Society 😊
Walk arrangements are as follows:
· Date: Sunday, May 25th 2025
· Meet/park: 9.15 am at Spencer Park. We will meet near the mini-golf area, just inside the main entrance, where we will organise drivers/vehicles to transport walkers to the starting point at Kainga Park.
· Walk starts: 9.40 am
· Route: Flat walking, gravelly on the stopbanks; potentially some mud and puddles on the Brooklands Lagoon track, with some boardwalks. Bring water/nibbles and binoculars; toilets at Kainga Park, Brooklands and Spencer Park.
· During the walk, speakers will share thoughts on the natural and cultural history of the area.
· Duration: 2.5 hours walking (including stops)
We anticipate arriving back at Spencer Park by 12.30pm, where we'll arrange drivers to pick up the vehicles from Kainga.
