With the Canterbury economy in the doldrums, the City Mission struggling to assist the hungry and homeless, the Christ Church Cathedral awaiting post-quake reinstatement, and being ‘Church of England’ far less in vogue than being a Crusaders’ fan, intimating that ‘Canterbury’ settlement commenced in 1850 with expat Brits dreaming of Oxford spires is contentious in some quarters. But the tales of the Canterbury Association and the European migrants of 1850 are vital and colourful strands interweaving with Māori and Pre-Adamites in the historical tapestry of our province. To honour ancestors in Māori culture, you would practice whakapapa, acknowledge your tūpuna, share their stories, and celebrate their legacy. On 16 December 2025, there is good reason to commemorate 175 years!
