In recent years, religious belief and practice in China have increasingly come under official control. At the same time, in 2018 under Pope Francis, the Vatican entered into a controversial agreement with Chinese authorities on the appointment of bishops.
Join Fr. Gianni Criveller, one of the world's leading experts on the Catholic Church in China (and a former missionary there), as he explains the current circumstances and challenges facing Catholics in China today and discusses the effects of that 2018 Sino-Vatican agreement. ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Fr. Gianni Criveller is a missionary of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME); for about 30 years, he lived among the Chinese people in the four areas of "Greater China": Taiwan, Macau, Hong Kong, and continental China. He currently serves as director of the PIME Center in Milan, of the magazine Mondo e Missione, and of PIME's AsiaNews agency.
He is also president of the International Association of Catholic Missiologists (IACM) and sits on the board of directors of the Italian Theological Association (ATI). Additionally, he is a professor of theology in Hong Kong, Monza (Italy), and Milan as well as an Honorary Research Fellow at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is the author, editor, and co-editor of about 20 books as well as hundreds of articles in various academic and popular journals around the world, and his work has been translated into various languages.
