Chicago is home to something wonderfully unlikely: Illinois' largest remaining breeding colony of the state‑endangered Black‑crowned Night Heron. For twenty years now, these red‑eyed, night‑fishing birds have chosen to nest in Lincoln Park. They migrate from as far as the Gulf of Mexico each spring, returning to a city that has become their Illinois stronghold. Proof that conservation collaboration works.

-Family Hour 5-6! The early hours are great for families! Bring the kids! 
-If you're coming from work, aim to arrive by 6:30 pm so you don't miss the speakers, entertainment and raffle. 

Speakers from the Chicago BCNH Project, Lincoln Park Zoo, University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign, Windy City Bird Lab, and Urban Rivers will share how this happened, what's been learned, and what's being done to help this handsome bird. 

Activities will include: Heron information and hands‑on activities for all ages from the Chicago BCNH Project, A trail‑cam station from Urban Rivers, S'mores and snacks, Limited beverages (including N/A options) with BYO welcome, A raffle with fun, heron‑friendly prizes — including items donated by the Chicago BCNH Project, Short bird walks, and maybe some surprise entertainment! 

If we're lucky, we may even spot herons along the river while we're there. It'll be fun, a little weird, and very Chicago — a celebration of the birds who chose this city.

Why it matters:

Black‑crowned Night Herons forage all along the Chicago River system. A healthier river means healthier herons. Proceeds from the night will be split between Urban Rivers, supporting ongoing river restoration, and the Chicago BCNH Project, which works to raise awareness of this cryptic, charismatic species to support its conservation.
