Make U of I a sanctuary campus! Rally at Board of Trustees mtg!
On November 22nd, the American Association of University Professors endorsed the sanctuary campus movement and urged colleges and universities to adopt sanctuary policies. However, on December 6th, the University of Illinois announced that it would not be a sanctuary campus for those at the university who are undocumented, despite overwhelming support from faculty, staff, and students. Denying sanctuary status means that the University of Illinois has no legal obligation to refuse to allow ICE officials on campus without a warrant, to provide tuition support to students with DACA status, and confidential legal support. Given the racist and xenophobic atmosphere that Trump has created, it is more important than ever to stand in solidarity with undocumented folks and to make sure our university is dedicated to diversity and is a safe space for all.
On January 19th, the University of Illinois board of trustees will meet at University of Illinois-Chicago. We will be there to demand that they rescind their decision and make University of Illinois a sanctuary campus. We will rally outside and have speakers lined up for the public comment section within the meeting itself. Join us!
