These prints influenced artists around the world, including Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, and continue to inspire contemporary artists today.In this workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of Japanese woodblock printing, focusing on inking, hand-printing, color layering, and kento—the traditional registration system that allows multiple carved blocks to align accurately. Unlike many introductory printmaking classes that focus on a single carved block, this workshop introduces the multi-block printing process that made Ukiyo-e famous.Students will print from instructor-provided carved blocks featuring designs inspired by traditional and contemporary Japanese imagery. Beginners may explore classic themes such as Mt. Fuji, while returning students are welcome to work with additional designs, including floral motifs and larger-format blocks.Participants will also collaborate on carving demonstration blocks, gaining an understanding of how multiple blocks are created and used together in the printing process. While some participants are carving, others will practice inking and printing techniques using prepared blocks, ensuring everyone has ample time to experience both aspects of Ukiyo-e production.As an optional finishing process, participants may experiment with decorative gold accents and gold-sprinkling techniques inspired by Japanese painting and print traditions. These finishing touches can be applied to completed prints, creating unique works that combine traditional woodblock printing with luxurious surface treatments.By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with multiple finished prints and a deeper appreciation for one of Japan’s most influential artistic traditions.No experience required.
