Punk@50, a transatlantic, multi-city initiative marking the 50-year anniversary of punk taking place at Goethe-Instituts across North America this fall, join us for this screening of DECODER.Dir. MuschaWest Germany, 1984, 87 min.In German and English with English subtitlesIn an early cyberpunk version of 1980s Berlin, audiophile F.M. (played by F.M. Einheit of the legendary German noise band Einstürzende Neubauten) spends his nights tuned into the peaceful, unobtrusive Muzak played from nearby H Burger restaurants. But when he discovers that it secretly carries subliminal messages encouraging mindless consumption, he teams up with a group of urban pirates (led by Genesis P-Orridge) to spread a musical antidote. Its patrons awakened from their fast-food slumber and on the edge of all-out anti-capitalist insurrection, H Burger headquarters decides to dispatch a special agent to permanently deal with their F.M. problem.Inspired by a 1970 essay by William S. Burroughs (who also stars in the film) and featuring the music of Soft Cell, Einstürzende Neubauten, and The The, DECODER doubles as a midnight cult gem and an analog-age riot against the encroachment of technology on the autonomy of human desire and perception. This event is free and open to the public, but please register in advance and bring a state- or federally-issued photo ID for check-in in our lobby. https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events6/banners/a2d7df60-cd20-11f1-9b7e-d709e3268b78-rimg-w1200-h522-dc486848-gmir.png - **Event URL**: https://allevents.in/chicago/decoder-free-film-screening/100002001938980381 - **Event Categories**: entertainment, music, live-music - **Interested Audience**: - total_interested_count: 0 - **Event Highlights**: - Doors Open At: 5:30 PM - Duration: 2 hours - Location: Goethe-Institut Chicago - Languages: English ## Ticket Details - **Ticket Price Range**: min: 0, max: 0, currency: USD ## Event venue details - **city**: Chicago - **state**: IL - **country**: United States - **location**: Goethe-Institut Chicago - **lat**: 41.88482 - **long**: -87.62493899999998 - **full address**: Goethe-Institut Chicago, 150 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, United States ## Event gallery - **Alt text**: Decoder | Free Film Screening - **Image URL**: https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events9/banners/37a3ba35045229eb4cd253843276fdd324331e3d1a944cb6ec6860175dc9b664-rimg-w1200-h818-dc080808-gmir.jpg?v=1790420472 ## FAQs - **Q**: When and where is Decoder | Free Film Screening being held? - **A:** Decoder | Free Film Screening takes place on Mon, 26 Oct, 2026 at 06:00 pm to Mon, 26 Oct, 2026 at 08:00 pm at Goethe-Institut Chicago, 150 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, United States. - **Q**: Who is organizing Decoder | Free Film Screening? - **A:** Decoder | Free Film Screening is organized by Goethe-Institut Chicago. - **Q**: Who is this event for?
