While we condemn this type of political violence and mourn every tragic loss of life, we also believe our standards for compassion must be equal and unwavering. Becasue the irony cuts deep; October 14 is also the birthday of George Floyd. It is also the day 6-year-old Wadee Alfayoumi, a Palestinian child in Illinois, was murdered. Another reminder of the violence this country refuses to name or honor.We know what this country chooses to remember, and what it erases. While Kirk is lifted up, the names of Trey Reed—found hung on his college campus, Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez—killed by ICE, Melissa Hortman—a top Democratic legislator targeted and killed—and countless children in Palestine, Congo and Sudan remain unspoken. State violence continues to take lives, while our communities continue to fight for dignity and justice.We are not surprised. But we are vigilant. Because our greatest power is our people. And though Assata Shakur, an elder who lived long enough to see generations carry her name forward, passed on Sept 25th, the FBI kept her on its Most Wanted Terrorist list with a $2 million bounty on her head until then. Even in her passing, this country tried to criminalize Black resistance.This is why we come together: not only to honor those in our community whose lives were stolen, but also to honor those who gave us the blueprint to fight for ourselves. Remembrance is not optional. While administrations erase our history—like stripping Black history from Smithsonian websites and museums—our communities are under fresh attack. ICE raids have terrorized families on Chicago’s South Side, ripping loved ones from their homes. In moments like this, memory must be part of our resistance, and solidarity must be our shield. Now more than ever, we need racial and religious solidarity—Black, Brown, immigrant, Jewish, Muslim, Christian—to defend one another and to remind each other of our greatest power: our people.What to ExpectThis evening of remembrance and resistance will bring us together in:Musical Tributes & Choir Performances honoring lives taken too soon.A People’s Assembly Panel featuring movement land faith eaders across coalitions, grounding us in collective solidarity and action.Community Conversation & Fellowship where we remember, organize, and connect across struggles.Together, we will lift up the names and stories of those lost, and we will refuse to let their lives be in vain. The Black liberation movement has always been internationalist—this gathering continues in that tradition.The public altar will be created by Chicago artist , whose work transforms memory into monument. Henderson recently designed the Mamie Till-Mobley and Emmett Till Memorial, unveiled in 2023 at Argo Community High School, honoring Mamie’s courage and lifelong fight for justice after the lynching of her son, Emmett Till.
