Together, we’ll explore how everyday media—photos, discs, stories, and shared spaces—becomes part of a living community archive. As the second installment of the Capture & Color workshop series and part of the West Side Love Map Project, this gathering builds on our North Lawndale workshop by shifting focus from capturing history to conserving it—through physical media preservation, photo digitization, storytelling, and creative reflection.Garfield Park History & the Chicago Freedom MovementThis workshop centers Garfield Park’s role in Chicago’s Civil Rights history, with a focus on the Chicago Freedom Movement of 1966—a citywide campaign that brought national attention to long-standing local organizing around fair housing, education equity, and racial justice.Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s presence in Chicago helped amplify this movement, but the work was deeply rooted in local leadership, educators, faith leaders, and grassroots organizations. Organizing and movement-building took place across multiple West Side sites, including churches and community spaces that served as hubs for strategy, convening, and collective action.Through guided dialogue and storytelling, we’ll explore:The role of West Side churches and community organizations as anchors of the Chicago Freedom MovementAlbert Raby, educator, organizer, and civil rights leader who played a central role in organizing the Chicago Freedom Movement and supporting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s engagement in ChicagoRaby’s leadership within the Coordinating Council of Community Organizations (CCCO), a coalition of grassroots groups organizing around housing, schools, and racial justiceThe legacy of Al Raby High School, named in his honor and rooted in the Garfield Park communityWe’ll also open conversation around how the West Side is defined and divided, East Garfield Park, West Garfield Park, East Humboldt Park, and West Humboldt Park, and what those boundaries mean historically, culturally, and personally. Using our location as a reference point, participants are invited to reflect on how naming, maps, and borders shape identity, memory, and belonging. What to ExpectHands-on experiences blending creativity, technology, and healing:CD / DVD Preservation & Archiving StationBring a favorite CD or DVD that holds personal meaningLearn best practices for labeling, storing, and preserving discsLive demonstrations of burning photos and videos to CD/DVDExplore physical media as a tool for long-term preservation and media ownershipWest Side Trivia with raffle prizesPhoto Digitization StationBring printed family or community photos to be professionally scannedLearn how digitization helps protect memories from loss and decayIntergenerational Storytelling CirclesGuided conversations led by Drea, centered on love, legacy, and belongingParticipants share the stories behind their CDs, DVDs, and photographsReflect on how personal media connects family history to neighborhood identity Design & Reflection Stations Original Garfield Park–inspired activities including:Heart Head Coloring sheet watering plants, symbolizing conservation, care, and growthElvin the Elephant Coloring sheet biking to the Fifth Avenue Foods, highlighting clean air, sustainability, and neighborhood pride. Each workshop adds another layer to a growing collective record of the West Side’s beauty, resilience, and leadership.Event DetailsLocation: Firehouse Loft3700 W.
