Clem Leek/Mykel Boyd/piv-ots/Christopher Elmore

Elastic welcomes four working sound artists making waves in contemporary composition and minimalism. British-born composer Clem Leek makes his Chicago debut.

Clem Leek

Clem Leek is a British musician, composer & sound artist. He currently resides in the U.S. city of Chicago. Clem’s compositions draw from a range of genres to create a unique & contemporary style. He is now a well recognised name in the ‘Modern Classical’ genre.

Trained as a pianist from a young age, Clem Leek grew up around music, picking up every instrument he could lay his hands on. He often uses the beauty of natural surroundings from his childhood and personal experiences as inspiration for his works.

Releases include such works ‘America’ (2016), a reflection on his time in Chicago, ‘Lifenotes’ (2011), a mixture of very personal delicate piano & guitar works, ‘Holly Lane’ (2010), a vast and beautiful textural exploration into the world of classically driven soundscapes and ‘Rest’ (2013), a stunning example of gentle guitar compositions.

This will be Leek’s debut Chicago performance.

Mykel Boyd

Mykel Boyd (°1970, Kankakee, IL) makes sound recordings, conceptual artworks, photos, installations and films. By experimenting with aleatoric processes, Boyd creates work in which a fascination with the clarity of content and an uncompromising attitude towards conceptual and minimal art can be found. The work is aloof and systematic and a cool and neutral imagery is used.

His practice provides a useful set of allegorical tools for maneuvering with a pseudo-minimalist approach in the world of conceptual art: these meticulously planned works resound and resonate with images culled from the fantastical realm of imagination. With a subtle minimalistic approach, he formalizes the coincidental and emphasizes the conscious process of composition that is behind the seemingly random works. Thethought processes, which are supposedly private, highly subjective and unfiltered in their references to dream worlds, are frequently revealed as assemblages.

His works feature coincidental, accidental and unexpected connections which make it possible to revise art history and, even better, to complement it. Combining unrelated aspects lead to surprising analogies. By applying abstraction, he creates intense personal moments masterfully created by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, luring the viewer round and round in circles.

piv-ots

Nicholas Burrage has released several highly-praised drone albums since 2007 under his previous surname, Szczepanik.
After taking a break for half a decade, he’s back with piv-ots, a new experimental music project utilizing synthesizers, samplers, and drum machines to create mesmerizing layers of sound that also welcome unexpected changes.

Christopher Elmore

Christopher Elmore (b. 1987) makes art and music, inspired in part by ongoing struggles with mental health issues, and the urge to continue living and creating in spite of them. He explores minimalism, generative composition techniques, and improvisation through analog and digital modular synthesis. He has been featured in concert at the Empty Bottle, High Concept Laboratories, and Open Space, and has performed live in collaboration with dancers Kara Brody and Amanda Maraist. Christopher is the caretaker of Editions Black & Blue, a private press specializing in limited edition art and sound objects. He currently lives and works in Chicago, Illinois.
