No partner or prior experience needed! Whether you’re completely new to Blues or looking to strengthen your fundamentals, you’ll learn tools you can take straight to the social dance floor.

What You’ll Learn

• The fundamentals of Blues rhythms, posture, and grounded movement
• Connection skills across close embrace, open embrace, hand-hold, and break-away positions
• Solo Blues movements to help you groove confidently on your own or with a partner
• Foundational turns, both connected and free, that you can use right away
• Partnership skills for clearly communicating movement and musical ideas
• How to comfortably transition between solo and partnered dancing

Stick Around & Practice!

After class, we’ll have an open practice hour from 8–9 PM. Review the material, ask questions, work on those tricky moves, or simply get more dancing in!

Bonus Field Trip: September 17 will include an optional post-class field trip to get out on the social dance floor and put your new skills into practice!

Meet Your Teachers

💃 Ruby Red

Ruby started Swing dancing in San Francisco in 2001 and discovered Blues soon after. Since then, she has had the pleasure of DJing and teaching nationally and throughout Europe.

A fierce competitor, Ruby has placed and finaled in numerous Blues competitions as both a lead and a follow. As an instructor and judge, she values connection, musicality, partnership, and risk-taking.

With extensive training in body mechanics, as well as experience as a personal trainer and movement coach, Ruby has a knack for identifying technique challenges and creating innovative ways for students to practice and improve both in and out of class.

When she’s not kicking ass on the dance floor, she’s studying the intersection of physics and dance.

🕺 Mark Castillo

Mark first discovered Blues dancing after spotting a flyer in a California hostel. More than a decade later, he’s still traveling the country in search of live music and late-night dancing.

He loves Blues for its improvisational nature and is excited to share what he’s learned with new and experienced dancers alike.

When he’s not dancing, you can find Mark being a foodie and exploring new foods and restaurants around Chicago.

No partner. No experience. No pressure. Just come ready to move, learn, and groove. 💙
