Solarpunk is a utopian artistic and social movement that envisions what the future looks like if humanity successfully solves major challenges like climate change and creates sustainable, equitable societies. Unlike sci-fi dystopias that warn us of what might go wrong, Solarpunk focuses on what could go right, imagining a world where humanity has achieved harmony between nature, technology, and community. 

Solarpunk explicitly acknowledges the grim trajectory of modern society while operating as a fundamentally "anti-dystopian" movement. In Solarpunk philosophy, the dystopian elements of our current world are treated as immediate problems to be solved rather than an inescapable fate. It relies on "hope with teeth", the belief that humanity must consciously choose to repair the world rather than resign to its destruction.

Solarpunk isn't waiting in the future. Fragments of it already exist. Community energy cooperatives in rural Europe. Car-free neighborhoods being reclaimed in Latin America. Grassroots flood-resilient architecture being built across Southeast Asia right now, without government funding or corporate backing. Even here in Chiang Mai, people are quietly experimenting with community gardens, shared solar installations, and low-tech housing called earth homes that work with the climate instead of against it.

For tonight’s Questions That Matter we’ll be asking questions such as: why does this image of the future feel so distant or potentially unrealistic? Who performs the hidden manual labor like weeding and late-night repairs in these conceptual communities, and how do we ensure they are the same people enjoying those gardens? If we actually enter a Solarpunk era, how do you think future generations will remember us—and what parts of our present might they romanticize, condemn as the generation that waited until it was almost too late?

As usual, the goal of the night isn't simply to agree, disagree, or learn. It's also to connect through genuine, lively, interactive discussion and, potentially, to go to some of the unexpected and uncharted places that deep and free conversation can take us.
