Neurodivergent language can be casual shorthand for anything we might find annoying, obsessive, or socially clumsy. Meanwhile, people who are actually autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, or otherwise neurodivergent are moving through the world with strategies most of us never have to think about: masking*, compensating, exhausting themselves to appear "normal" enough to be taken seriously.

So what's actually happening here? 

Are diagnostic terms being weaponized as new insults?  And to what degree is "everyone's a little neurodivergent" a compassionate truth or a dismissive cop-out? And in a world built entirely around neurotypical social rules that nobody bothers to explain, what do we actually owe people whose brains work differently?

For tonight's Questions That Matter, we'll be exploring whether social norms are actually neutral or neurotypical by default, and whether we're ready to hold ourselves accountable for the times we’ve waved away the genuine struggles of others. Some potential prompts and examples of the nights questions:

Did someone ever wave away a struggle of yours with "oh, everyone gets like that”? What did it do to you? And when did you last make the same wave at someone else?

Is the goal of a diverse society that everyone gets understood, or that we get better at cooperating with people we don't understand?

We celebrate neurodivergent traits when they produce genius-level art or billion-dollar tech innovations, but we punish those exact same traits in the breakroom or in other social settings. Do we only accept differences when it's highly profitable?

As usual, the goal of the night isn’t simply to agree, disagree, or learn. It’s also to connect through genuine, lively, interactive discussion and, potentially, to go to some of the unexpected and uncharted places that deep and free conversation can take us.

Since we started Questions That Matter, between 25 and 50 people have joined us weekly. When we wrap up, we hope you’ll mingle and exchange numbers. Additionally, every week many of us go for dinner and you’re very welcome to join us. As polarized as the world is right now, one of the deepest connections still available to human beings is a shared meal.

Whether you’re in Chiang Mai for a short visit or you’re a long-term expat, we hope you can join us—not only to explore the deeper questions but to make new connections and friendships.
