One reading is theft. Strip a practice of its ethics and community, sell the calm without the obligations, and you manufacture people who remain serene while harm continues. The sacred is reduced to a productivity metric.

Religions have always traveled, mutated, and been sold. There may be no pure original here to defile. If a stripped-down version measurably helps someone suffer less, "you're doing it wrong" starts to sound like gatekeeping. The people crying extraction might just be flattering a fantasy of a "full East" and an "empty West" that neither side actually lives in.

For tonight’s Questions That Matter, we’re not going to be looking for a comfortable moral high ground, but to look at the boundary between cultural theft and spiritual evolution by exploring prompts such as:

1. A soldier uses breath control to stay perfectly calm while committing an atrocity. The technique works flawlessly. Is this a failure of mindfulness, or proof that when severed from its complete ethical framework, the practice becomes morally void?

2. What's the dumbest rebrand of a sacred concept you've actually seen in the wild? ("Manifest your abundance," "that's not very high-vibe of you," etc.)

3. The 1960s counterculture imported Eastern mysticism as a radical weapon to dismantle Western imperialism. Fifty years later, how did that exact same mysticism become the premier, unquestioned management philosophy of exploitative Silicon Valley?

As usual, the goal of the night isn’t simply to agree, disagree, or learn. It’s also to connect through genuine, lively, interactive discussion and, potentially, to go to some of the unexpected and uncharted places that deep and free conversation can take us.

Since we started Questions That Matter, between 25 and 50 people have joined us weekly. When we wrap up, we hope you’ll mingle and exchange numbers. Additionally, every week many of us go for dinner and you’re very welcome to join us. As polarized as the world is right now, one of the deepest connections still available to human beings is a shared meal.

Whether you’re in Chiang Mai for a short visit or you’re a long-term expat, we hope you can join us—not only to explore the deeper questions but to make new connections and friendships.
