From an artist’s perspective, the Delmarva Peninsula is a liminal space between development and wilderness. It is an agricultural breadbasket and a maritime treasure featuring farmland giving way to marshland, rivers running from the bay and to the sea, and where very often the lines between water and sky, field and forest, the conquered and unconquerable, ebb and flow like nature itself.
From the earliest human settlements to today's farmers, fisheries and wild marshes, the Eastern Shore is a storied and unique place. It is both promised land and contested ground, a place through which peoples have moved in hope, refuge, and self-liberation. It is the land of Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, and the Underground Railroad. It is a place of deep indigenous heritage, colonial influence, and maritime perseverance.
For our October exhibit, artists from a variety of media and life experiences showcase work reflecting the rich history of people and creatures who share this land. The Eastern Shore Life exhibition is a celebration of the verdant land, bountiful wildlife, resilient people, and bending landscapes of the place we call home.
The exhibition will feature opportunities for local music, fresh oysters, and abundant community.
