West Midlands Group Estate Tour
Nuffield Scholars Ed Barnston and Charlie Steer extend a very special invitation to scholars and potential scholars to enjoy an informative and sociable summer event exploring how two rural estates are adopting new strategies and revenues to survive and strengthen their traditional farming businesses:
? Ed is the owner and manager at Barnston Estate in Cheshire and received 2019 Bledisloe Gold Medal for Landowners. Ed has been studying ‘Estate Management - Benchmarking Success’. The Estate comprises 1,800 acres with multiple farms, forestry operations, renewable energy interests, a business park, residential lets and land development which provides local housing and employment for 200 people.
?Charlie is the arable manager for Grosvenor Farms Ltd & Estate in Cheshire, starting as part of a graduate traineeship in 2011 and progressing to management in late 2014. Charlie has been studying ‘The circular farm - Minimising input for maximum output in a mixed farming system’. The Grosvenor Estate comprises 11,500 acres and is based around Eaton Hall, the seat and principal home of the Duke of Westminster. Charlie’s responsibilities cover management of combinable and forage cropping, agronomy, staff, machinery and nutrient management; in short, all the farming operations involved in growing combinable crops and ‘at both ends’ of the cow on the 3,500 head dairy enterprise.
The event will commence at Crewe Hill, Crewe Hill Lane, Farndon, Chester CH3 6PD.
