The Trans Age Project - seeing people as people
Susan M Benbow, is a Psychiatrist and Systemic Therapist, Visiting Professor of Mental Health and Ageing in the Faculty of Health and Social Care at the University of Chester, and Director of Older Mind Matters Ltd. Susan worked as consultant psychiatrist in Central Manchester from 1984 to 2001 and then consultant psychiatrist in Wolverhampton from 2001 to 2009. In 2009 she redesigned her working life and moved on to develop a portfolio career. Susan has published numerous journal articles and presented her research at conferences in the UK and abroad.
Susan’s lecture will focus on The Trans Age Project, which was commissioned by Age UK Cheshire and funded by Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Equality and Diversity Fund.
This research project involved a literature search and interviews with 17 older (age 50 plus) trans individuals and with 22 health and social care personnel. The aim was to seek experiences and views on the health and social care of older trans individuals.
In this lecture Susan will explore: key learning from the literature, findings from the interviews, and recommendations from the research
