On the Fringe is a captivating documentary that takes viewers on a journey through Canada’s most vibrant and eclectic arts festival circuit. Chronicling the experiences of four groups of artists as they travel from coast to coast, the film provides a rare and compelling insight into the world of Fringe theatre, and the artists who rely on these festivals to make their dreams come true.

Synopsis:
Every summer, a ragtag crew of performing artists journey across the country to perform their work on the Canadian Fringe Festival circuit. This touring circuit is a unique showcase that attracts thousands of performers from all over the world bent on reclaiming control of their creative output and process.

Experience the highs and lows of life on the road through the eyes of four different groups of artists: a workaholic from Ottawa obsessing over professional success, a Fringe veteran from the UK celebrating his 100th festival on the road, a power couple from New York who met on the circuit, and four rookies from Saskatoon touring together for the very first time.

Join their road trip of a lifetime as they struggle to balance love, friendship, and financial risk with artistic reward!

Following the screening, join featured artist and producer Nancy Kenny, along with Halifax Fringe Festival Executive Director Sara Graham, for a short Q&A.  

This event is presented to benefit the Halifax Fringe Festival (running August 27-September 7, 2025).  All profits will be donated to supporting this yearly festival, which gives a platform to hundreds of local artists every year, in an unjuried, accessible festival where 100% of ticket price goes directly to the artists involved.
