North East showcase: Roseberry Primary and Nursery School

Thinking about starting the OPAL Primary Programme at your school? Join us and be inspired by observing one of the best school playtimes in the country. Where kids get muddy, build dens, take risks, explore, experiment and achieve every single day!

This event is for headteachers from schools interested in starting the OPAL Primary Programme. If the head is unable to attend, please send a suitable deputy. We allow for two tickets per school, so you are also welcome to bring a member of your teaching staff.

12pm–12:20pm Welcome

12:20pm–1:15pm Observation of playtime

Come and see a platinum OPAL playtime in action - ask the children about how they manage risk and the grown-ups about the changes they have seen.

1:15pm–1:40pm Presentation from the headteacher

Join the headteacher to hear about their journey to outstanding playtimes and take the opportunity to ask questions.

1:40pm–2:30pm Introduction to OPAL

An introduction to the OPAL Primary Programme from the North East OPAL team.

2:30pm–2:45pm Evaluation and next steps

Roseberry Primary school started their OPAL journey in March 2023. They have worked incredibly hard to establish such a wonderful culture of play in their school. Play is highly valued by the whole school community. Despite challenges on their journey, through their dedicated and committed efforts to improve playtimes, they undertook their final audit in October 2024 and achieved an OPAL Platinum Award. Without doubt they have one of the most amazing playtimes for a school in the North East. Their play offer is outstanding, ensuring every child has a fantastic playtime every single day.

The OPAL Primary Programme is an award-winning mentor supported school improvement programme that addresses all the areas that schools must plan for if they want to strategically and sustainably improve the quality of their play opportunities.
