In November 2017, he assumed the role of Mayor, completing the unexpired term of Alan P. Krasnoff, and was later elected to a full term in 2018. He has since been re-elected in 2020 and 2024.

Mayor West is a longtime educator, holding a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education from Old Dominion University, a master’s degree in Educational Administration and Leadership from the University of Virginia, and a doctorate in Leadership and Policy Studies from Virginia Tech. He is also a graduate of Great Bridge High School (Class of 1970).
