- **Event Description**: Stephen Sheaffe AM will talk about how he assembled family history information for his many books, some of which we hold in our Library.About this EventPhoto by L CosgroveTHIS WILL BE A HYBRID EVENT, ONLINE AND AT THE RESEARCH CENTRE.PLEASE NOTE THIS WILL BE HELD IN QLD TIME, NO DAYLIGHT SAVINGS.A ZOOM LINK WILL BE PROVIDED TO REGISTERED ATTENDEES THE EVENING BEFORE THE EVENT.Stephen Sheaffe AM has written 10 books on his, and his wife Glenda’s, family history, plus books on local history in the Stephens Shire and has many papers published in the Queensland History Journal and elsewhere. The method he adopted is much the same for each book. He will refer to the methodology adopted in the first book (Sheaffe Family History) on his side of the family and the methodology used in the book on Glenda’s maiden name (McCutcheon). This book is titled The McCutcheon Super Fifteen. On 16 June 1986 Stephen resolved to research his family history (the name Sheaffe). He was then 33 years of age, was a practicing barrister in Brisbane, was married and had three small children, aged 7, 5 and 2. This research began 40 years ago. He rang his father (then aged 65 years) and told him what his intention was. He asked him about his father, his mother and grandmother and grandfather etc. Over the coming weeks he visited all his 5 siblings. They all lived in the Richmond River region. He recorded their life’s story and collected any written material they had collected over time. Over the next few months, Stephen visited the General Post Office in Brisbane and looked up the name Sheaffe in all these books, and recorded the names and phone numbers. He rang them over the next few weeks, and also looked up the records at the John Oxley Library, then located on William Street. In the Christmas holidays 1986 he and his family visited every relative in Sydney, Melbourne, Country NSW and Qld and collected copies of all their photographs and documents and recorded their life stories. Stephen collected a vast array of material. A book was published that included all the collected material for a reunion held in October 1988.He also started collecting material on his mother’s maiden name (Weir) and his paternal grandmother’s name and his father’s maternal side (Whittall). He also wrote a book on his maternal grandmother’s maiden name (Irving) and her grandmother’s maiden name (Anderson). All his mother’s forbears came from Ulster. His wife kept saying that he should collect material on her family (McCutcheon, Freeman, Fischer and Saunders). She was born in New Zealand. Over the years they visited every country, town and location where their family lived and worked, including every place in NZ, and where Glenda’s family lived overseas especially Ulster Ireland, Germany, Prussia and England. The Sheaffe family originally came from Flanders, before migrating to England. A branch of the family shifted to America in about 1650 before moving back to England in about 1790. In 1834 they migrated to Australia. A lot has been written about this family, especially in America.SPEAKER: Stephen Sheaffe AMStephen Sheaffe AM is a retired Australian barrister and prominent local historian based in Brisbane, Queensland.
