Young Scientists - Learn Thermal Shock By Repurposing A Bottle.
Thermal shock occurs when a thermal gradient causes different parts of an object to expand by different amounts. This differential expansion can be understood in terms of stress or of strain, equivalently. Thermal shock produces cracks as a result of rapid component temperature change.
In this fun and educational workshop, kids will learn what thermal shocking is by subjecting a glass bottle to various temprature gradient and using the technique to our advantage by carefully cutting open a glass bottle. The cut bottle will be then polished and can be used as functional object (planter, stationary etc). It is art and science combined and one that is sure to tickle your kid's geeky side.
