Reach OUT: Lgbtiqa+ Rights beyond the Decriminalisation Verdict

Reach OUT: Lgbtiqa+ Rights beyond the Decriminalisation Verdict

Reach OUT: Beyond the Decriminalisation Verdict - Scenario for LGBTIQA+ Rights and Health

The Supreme Court of India gave its historic verdict decriminalising homosexuality on September 6, 2018. This verdict will have its impact on the lives of innumerable lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, asexual, and other queer people (collectively LGBTIQA+) in India.

This makes it imperative for the LGBTIQA+ communities and civil society to become aware of the implications of the judgement in order to be able to address the issues that LGBTIQA+ people are likely to face with respect to their basic human rights – whether these are new issues or older ones. Some of these pertain to access of unbiased and quality health care and legal aid services. Now that the verdict talks about to right to health as part of right to life for members of the LGBTIQA+ community, will anything change in this regard? Will things continue the same as before? What are the other implications of right to life and dignity?

Varta Trust, Kolkata in collaboration with Grindr For Equality, Los Angeles and SAATHII, Chennai has developed an online locator for queer friendly sexual health, mental health and legal aid service providers across India ( http://www.vartagensex.org/reachout.php). The locator or database is an effort to address the numerous queries on health concerns and complaints of rights violations which the "Varta" webzine has been receiving from its readers since its start in 2013.

In view of the Supreme Court verdict against Section 377 and to discuss the issues raised above, the British Council, Chennai has extended their kind support and encouragement to host the event for the Chennai launch of the locator on September 29, 2018.

This event is part of 'Reach OUT', a multimedia campaign to disseminate information about the locator, which lists inclusive service providers that LGBTIQA+ people can access for different health and legal issues.
